I do believe that Sucker is damaged goods. Before he was yelled at by Pete he was happy and cared about the things he did. After Pete yelled at him, Sucker didn't care anymore and wasn't happy. Sucker was only twelve, and he had already been through so much. For him to find out that the one person who he really looked up to disliked him, it changed him forever.
Instead of being sad, Sucker took the words that Pete said to them, and did them. Pete said to Sucker, " What kind of sissy do you want to grow up to be anyways?" (McCullers, 10). Sucker took these words to heart and started hanging out with a bad gang. Pete also said, "Why do you always hang around me? Don't you know when you're not wanted?" (McCullers, 10). Again, Sucker believed that that was want Pete really wanted and started hanging out with new friends. Sucker will never again be the same shy, happy-go-lucky kid that he used to be.
